Kiribati – Christmas Island trip report

Christmas Island, Kiribati or CXI, Whatever you know it as, I bet you have only heard about it as an amazing fishing destination, and more specifically a great Bonefish destination.

I recently had the opportunity to head over to CXI, do some filming and also get a bit of fishing in for myself. The week was spent wading the flats, and being transported around in trucks and skiffs to get to more remote sections of the island.

CXI was everything I was hoping it would be, beautiful clear blue waters, plenty of bonefish on offer, amazing locals, and some spectacular guides, all of whom made spotting the bonefish all the more easier. At times, especially when it was cloudy, it was impossible for myself to see any fish, but our trusty guides with their trained eyes were still able to put us onto fish.

I’m not going to delve into the fishing side of things too much, as there is ridiculous amounts of information out there on what fly’s, weight rods, lures etc to take to the island for a successful fishing trip.

All I wanted to achieve with this post was a bit of a visualization for people who are looking to travel there. While it is a beautiful place, I would urge you to keep in mind it is a very isolated location and has very basic amenities, accommodation and supplies on the island. If your looking for 5 star accomodation and all the bells and whistles CXI is not the place for you. I still think it is an amazing destination and I had a trip of a lifetime there ticking species like bonefish and triggerfish off my bucketlist.

Tight lines. Videos below.
